Nortel Networks Receives FCC Type Acceptance for LMDS Wideband 28 GHz Radios
9/22/99, Nortel
DALLAS -- Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE:NT] announced it has received the U.S. Federal Communication Commission (FCC) type acceptance for its LMDS (local multipoint distribution service) wideband 28 GHz radios. The company received this certification for the broadband wireless access Reunion* point to multipoint 28 GHz, A-band, 150 MHz radios.
The significance of this achievement is that only vendors with FCC type acceptance certification can enable licensed operators to offer commercial LMDS service today. Nortel Networks is in the process of filing for type acceptance on its Reunion wideband 31 GHz LMDS B-band radios.
Nortel Networks Reunion broadband wireless access solution, part of the company's Unified Networks* offerings, is an economic solution for LMDS operators seeking to quickly deploy competitive broadband services in the local loop. The digital ATM-based Reunion point to multipoint solution uses frequencies from 24 GHz to 38 GHz to deliver high-speed, high-capacity voice, data, Internet and video services to business customers.
"FCC certification for wideband 28GHz radios is a major milestone in the growth and expansion of the broadband wireless access market," said Mike Andreatos, vice president and general manager, Nortel Networks, Broadband Wireless Access. "FCC type acceptance helps us maintain a leadership position in the LMDS arena and is also positive recognition of the expert technical design and development we have achieved with the Nortel Networks Reunion point to multipoint products."
To gain type acceptance, manufacturers must submit their products to rigorous testing. Some examples of the tests Nortel Networks completed after several weeks of round-the-clock effort are spectrum mask testing, emissions testing, frequency stability testing, and adjacent and co-channel interference testing.
Nortel Networks is one of the first manufacturers to have designed a test system for this new technology. Its test system is now being used to help set an industry baseline.
